With John away racing in Tasmania, the remainder of the GuitarGym-Orbea Team lined up on Sunday for the Mt Cotton Kermesse.

The day was our most successful of the season to date, with a 5th place achieved by myself, both myself and Ben making the critical break, and Dave and Bobo helping to control the pace in the bunch.

The race started fast, with a break forming almost immediately. We’d decided to let the break go, but after three or four laps, it looked like the break might have legs. So I jumped across.

In the following few laps, two more groups came across to the break, including Ben. At this point we had two team members, myself and Ben, in the break of about 15.

From there Ben and I tried to cover all attacks, and block where possible whenever the other had a gap. Dave and Bobo tried to control the pace in the bunch to ensure our break wasn’t caught.

During the second last lap a rider from a well represented team jumped away, establishing a good break. Ben then put in a monster turn to get us both back into contention.

The sprint was fast and furious. I managed to get over the line in 5th, with another UQCC rider, Mark Frendo, taking the win.

Next race up is the Under 19 State Championship support race in two weeks.
